The western region road cycling competition was concluded in Zuwara city on Friday, September 29. Five clubs from the western part of the country took part in the race, including Al-Jazeera from Zuwara, the Olympians from the Zawiyah, Nujoom Al-Sabriya from Al-Sabriya, and Al-Mutammar and Al-Intisar from Ajailat. The race was divided into two stages, closing with the 30 kilometers for junior cycling in the first session, while seniors competed on the 60 kilometers track on Abu-Kammash- Zuwara route. Al-Jazeera cyclists won the two races.

The besieging forces of the city of Derna from Dignity Operation have kidnapped the head of the ambulance and emergency services of the city. Akram Swaini, was kidnapped when he left the city to replenish basic emergency supplies. A source close to the Swaini family said that he was kidnapped near Azeyat area south of Derna, with his destination more than likely being Qirnada Prison. Civil society organizations have described this abduction and the continuation of kidnappings and arrests based on a person’s identity as a disgrace and appealed to the responsible authorities in the country to intervene and end the crisis facing the citizens of Derna.

The National Safety Department in Tripoli has put out the fire that broke out Tuesday in the building previously used by the Passport and Nationality Authority, which is located on Al-Saydi Street. Fire brigades managed to control the fire that broke out in the top floor of the building while the reason for the fire is yet to be determined.

The head of the Libyan Olympic Committee, Jamal Zerouq, stressed that the committee had no part in the recent decision by the International Table Tennis Federation to dissolve the Libyan Table Tennis Federation and form a temporary committee for 3 months until elections are held for a new board of directors. The Libyan Table Tennis Federation already held elections 10 months ago, which resulted in Mohamed AbuSaif becoming the head of the union. Zerouq stated at a press conference that in fact it was the clubs that complained to the international federation, and it was the president of the union, AbuSaif, who introduced the game into all sorts of conflicts and problems, all of which should never have happened.

The founder of what has come to be known as the 25th of September Movement, Baset Igtet, has declared on his official Facebook page that demonstrations will continue throughout Libyan cities. The Facebook post stated that the 5th of October is the date set for the demonstration in the city of Gharyan, and the 10th of October in the city of Sebha, then returning to Martyrs’ Square in Tripoli on the 20th of October. Igtet had previously called for a demonstration on the 25th of September in Martyrs Square in rejection of the current political, economic and security situation in the country.

The official spokesman for the General Electricity Company in Libya (GECOL), Ahmed Hussein, stated that the current status of the electrical grid has significantly improved due to the drop in temperature and reduction of power demand. He said this latest development has led to the absence of power deficit and actually providing a surplus reserve. Hussein added that GECOL will work on the maintenance of some power stations so as to operate at full production capacity during the winter peak without resorting to another load shedding program.

An unknown group has stolen the solar panels that operate the sound control system in the transmission line of the Man Made River in Sirte, near the northern gate of Oujla. An official of the Man Made River said that the maintenance of this system and the installation of new equipment had been done only 3 months ago, and that this same issue has been repeated more than once. The official also stressed the importance of this system in the daily monitoring of the progress of work in the different stations of the Man Made River.

An armed group based on the coastal road in the Harsha district of Zawiyah city robbed a transport vehicle carrying a shipment of medicines from the International Committee of the Red Cross destined for the Red Crescent branch in Ajaylat. The gunmen assaulted the driver and his assistant and ordered them out of the vehicle before seizing it. The shipment was allocated to those who have fled the armed clashes in the city of Sabratha and surrounding areas.

The Chairman of the Presidential Council, Fayez Sarraj, confirmed the presence of an opportunity to achieve stability in Libya if commitment to what is stated in the international road map is met. Sarraj reiterated during his meeting with the UN envoy to Libya Ghassan Salame Tuesday in Tripoli the importance of using a defined time frame to execute the road map. He added that they should benefit from past experience in dealing with the obstacles until the implementation of elections next year becomes a reality.

Libyan author Ibrahim Imam held on September 26 a book signing ceremony in Istanbul to mark the release of the Turkish copy of his book “Drops of Gold". The book consists of a collection of stories and legends from his native city Ghadames. The ceremony was sponsored by the Arab Business Forum. Ibrahim Imam, known as "Abu Isaac Al-Ghadamesi, was born in the oasis town of Ghadames in 1970. He graduated from the Aviation Tech and Meteorology College. However, his imaginative sense drove him into the literature world. He wrote stories and novels, in addition to historical research on the city of Ghadames.
