The General Authority for Communications and Informatics (GACI) is taking part in the World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC-17) in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from 9 to 20 October. The GACI said in its website that participants are expected to vote on supporting the telecommunications sector in Libya as well as evaluating the sector in order to establish appropriate institutions, build human capacity, develop telecommunications legislation and harness ICT for social development in Libya.

The Illegal Immigration Agency announced on Tuesday that 40 illegal immigrants, originating from Bangladesh, have been repatriated to their country via Mitiga International Airport in Tripoli. A statement from the agency stated that the Bangladeshis were sent on the voluntary return program, implemented by the agency in coordination and cooperation with the International Organization for Migration.

The Presidential Guard of the Presidential Council announced that they will send one of their groups to Italy for training. The Presidential Guard said that the participants will receive an advanced training course on the maintenance of the armoured Puma vehicle. The aim of the mission is to increase the combat efficiency of their members, it said.

The General Electricity Company in Libya (GECOL) announced on Tuesday the completion of maintenance work on the damaged 400 K.V cable, which is connected to the Gulf Steam Power Plant in Sirte. This comes after overcoming all difficulties faced by the engineers. The company's Information Office said in a statement that according to supervisors, the cable will be tested for the next two days, followed by operational steps on the first turbine at the Gulf Steam Power Plant, which should add another 350 megawatts to the electrical grid.

Police in Ajaylat town, 80 km west of Tripoli, has handed over 208 illegal immigrants to the Illegal Immigration Agency in Sabratha on Monday evening. The immigrants were mostly male, but there were also a number of children aged between 11 and 15 of Eritrean origin. The immigrants voluntarily left the warehouse where they were hiding out in preparation for their journey to Europe after becoming unable to withstand their hunger and thirst. According to one of the immigrants, they did not eat for five days; adding that the situation they were in was very bad and that they were beaten and tortured by the human smugglers.

The Libyan Coast Guard has rescued 121 illegal immigrants, originating from different African nationalities, off the coast of Garabulli town, 80 km east of Tripoli. The immigrants were taken to the landing point at Tripoli's naval base and the International Medical Corps provided them with the necessary medical assistance. They were then handed over Tajoura shelter of the Illegal Immigration Agency. Meanwhile, The Consul of the Republic of Burkina Faso issued temporary travel documents on Monday for his country’s immigrants to facilitate their voluntary repatriation.

The Teachers' Union, in a statement on Tuesday, demanded that the Minister for Education, Othman Abdul Jalil, and his deputy, Adel Jumaa, be dismissed from office immediately. The Union called on the Chairman of the Presidential Council to submit an apology consistent with what they described as the extent of the damage caused by the Minister of Education and his deputy. It also demanded the separation of the Ministry of Education from the Ministry of Higher Education. Teachers across Libya started Sunday an open strike demanding a 100% salary increase and health insurance.

The Office for the Support and Empowerment of Women organised a workshop for the employees of the Ministry of Education under the slogan Educated, Empowered and Independent on Tuesday morning, at the theatre of the Institute of Fine Arts in Tripoli. The organisations leader and supervisor of the event, Amal Malti, stated that the objective of the event is to give their office a proper introduction and determine the correct mechanisms for communication between her team and corresponding sectors and also educational institutions so that Libyan women can play a positive role in society.
