The management of the Man-Made River has confirmed restoring water supplies to Tripoli from Wednesday after completing maintenance work on the Hasawnah water system on Tuesday. On its Facebook page, the management said that the maintenance team began operating the water wells after the recovery of the electricity power in the system. The management announced last Sunday a cessation in the pumping process of water from Hasawnah wells because of power outages on the system of the river.

British Ambassador to Libya, Peter Millett, has declared that British companies are willing to contribute to maintenance projects, raising production capacity and exchanging experiences with the National Oil Corporation (NOC) companies. This came during a meeting with the Chairman of the National Oil Corporation, Mustafa Sinallah, on Tuesday in Tripoli. On its website, the NOC noted that the meeting discussed ways to enhance and develop cooperation between the two countries in the field of oil industry. The UK Ambassador called the NOC to coordinate for a meeting between the two countries’ oil companies next year in the port city of Aberdeen, Scotland to discuss cooperation.

Member of the House of Representatives (HoR), Izz al-Din Quireb, said that the parliament cancelled its meeting on Tuesday, for the second day in a row, due to the absence of representatives of the western region. He clarified that only 35 of the MPs attended the meeting, referring that the presidency of the parliament was not present. He pointed out that the HoR was scheduled to continue the discussion over the action plan submitted by the UN envoy to Libya, Ghassan Salama. Several members of Parliament in the western region were prevented from landing at Tobruk Airport last week for what was described as "security reasons."

US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said that Libya has the potentials that will guarantee its success and progress to overcome the current financial crisis and build an economically prosperous state. During his meeting with the Chairman of the Presidential Council, Fayaz Al-Sarraj, Mnuchin stressed that significant reforms must be implemented to regain confidence in the Libyan banking and financial system. He referred to his country's determination to provide expert assistance and to benefit from the experience of countries that have passed similar crises. For his part, Al-Sarraj said that Libya is going through a "severe" financial crisis, which is evident in the liquidity shortages, the plunge of the Libyan dinar exchange rate, and the high inflation rate, pointing out that plans and programs, which were reached in the rounds of economic dialogue with all parties concerned, are awaiting implementation of the Central Bank of Libya.

The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, has declared that the crisis of human trafficking in Africa’s Sahel region, the desert, Niger, Mali and Chad would lead to instability in Libya. "The treatment of the phenomenon of illegal immigration requires a partnership between the European Union, the origin countries of migrants besides the transit countries." Mogherini said in a press statement on Monday, adding that there is a need to create employment opportunities for young people in African countries. She called for support to the Libyan authorities in controlling borders and in managing the detention centers as well as providing assistance to international organizations that work to assist migrants.

The Libyan Football Federation (LFF) announced that the second round of the Libyan Premier League will be launched in the 20th of January while the second leg of the First Division will kick off on the 10th of the same month. The decision, which was published on the LFF official page on Tuesday, also referred to the ending date set for the preliminary round of the Cup of Libya on the 25th of this month. The first round of the Libyan Premier League ended in early November, putting the Ahli Tripoli, Al-Ittihad, Al-Tahaddi and Al-Ahli Benghazi on the top of their groups.

UN envoy to Libya, Ghassan Salama, revealed that he had initiated a dialogue with the World Bank and the Security Council's Libya sanctions committee in order to determine a mechanism for the management of Libyan frozen assets abroad, based on a UN resolution issued by the UN Security Council 2011. Salama pointed out at a roundtable meeting with a small group of researchers and journalists in the Egyptian capital that the United Nations Support Mission in Libya is seeking to reach a binding agreement for the Libyans in preparation for legislative and presidential elections by September 20, 2018, after achieving national reconciliation and adopting a permanent constitution for the country.

The US Supreme Court allowed Monday a full enforcement of US President Donald Trump's executive order to ban six Muslim-majority countries including Libya into US territory. Under the court's decision, the travel ban on nationals of the six countries is going into full effect, despite judicial appeals in lower courts. The decision of the Supreme Court came after Trump's request to lift two judicial decisions that were imposed and partially blocked by lower courts. The latest travel ban of Donald Trump bans people from eight countries: Syria, Libya, Iran, Yemen, Chad, Somalia, North Korea and Venezuela. Six of the countries have Muslim-majority populations.
