The Constitutional Chamber of the Libyan Supreme Court in Tripoli postponed on Sunday its consideration of the appeal filed by some members of the Constituent Assembly against the submission of the draft constitution to the House of Representatives for approval to the next court session on Wednesday. The Libyan Constitution Drafting Assembly (LCDA) voted last July to adopt the draft Libyan constitution by forty-three votes. However, a number of LCDA members appealed against the illegality of the vote on the basis that the voting session took place on a Saturday, which is an official holiday in all government departments in Libya. On the other hand, a number of administrative departments in the Libyan courts have refused to consider the appeal on the ground that the LCDA is a people-elected body; therefore, it is above the judiciary authority.

Sources have reported that several elected mayors refused to attend the first meeting of the municipalities of Libya to be held in Shahat town, east of the country, on January 22-23. The sources explained that the refusal was due to the mayors’ unwillingness to sit with non-elected persons who were appointed by the military governor of the eastern region. The mayors stressed their adherence to the democratic process and their solidarity with their elected counterparts who have been dismissed by force. The Municipality of Shahat said on Saturday that over 40 mayors and members of municipal councils had arrived in the town on board a National Oil Corporation plane in order to take part in the meeting.
