The new Italian ambassador to Libya, Giuseppe Buccino Grimaldi, arrived in Tripoli Friday to take up his assignment, succeeding former ambassador Giuseppe Beroni, the Italian embassy confirmed.

Grimaldi served as ambassador to Libya from September 2011 to February 2015, when Italy decided to close its embassy in the Libyan capital of Tripoli for security reasons.

The Italian government withdrew its ambassador, Giuseppe Peroni to Rome last August for "security reasons", following protests in Libya on his statements regarding the timing of the general elections, which was considered by some Libyans interference in the internal affairs of the country.
