The spokesman for the Municipal Guard, Mohammed Al-Naem, has requested the formation of a joint committee from the Food and Drug Control Center and The Libyan Advanced Center for Chemical Analysis to retest bread samples to verify whether they contain potassium bromate or not.

In a press statement, Al-Naem described the contradiction between the two centers’ reports on the presence of potassium bromate in bread as a serious matter, stressing that the Municipal Guard has not detected any compound of this banned substance in Libya so far.

The spokesman said that they will not tolerate those who use these materials, and will continue to scrutinize the processing operation.

Earlier, The Libyan Advanced Center for Chemical Analysis said that flour used in the manufacture of bread in Libya has high levels of potassium bromate that cause cancer, while the Food and Drug Control Centre denied this, confirming that the bread sold in the market is free of potassium bromate.
