Member of Tobruk-based House of Representatives Siham Sergiwa has been abducted by an armed group loyal to warlord Khalifa Haftar in the city of Benghazi, amid conflicting reports on her fate.

The gunmen attacked the MP's house shortly after her arrival in Benghazi and assaulted her husband before taking her to an unknown destination.

The Presidential Council, Tripoli-based House of Representatives and the High Council of State expressed concern about her abduction and demanded her immediate release.

The abduction came a day after Sergiwa appeared on Haftar-owned Libya Al-Hadat TV describing those supporting the war on Tripoli as extremists and called for the formation of a national unity government that includes all political spectrums, including the Muslim Brotherhood and other parties opposing Haftar.
