The Ministry of Local Government considered the establishment of steering councils by illegal bodies an infringement on the powers of the official institutions of the Libyan State.
"The establishment of steering councils composes a threat to the unity of service institutions at the local level," the ministry stated, warning that anyone dealing with these bodies will be subjected to prosecution.
The east-based interim government has established steering committees in a number of municipalities in replacement of the elected municipal councils.
