Mayor of Sharqiyah Municipality Imhimmed Al-Arabi said that people in the southern region are forced to pay huge sums of money to free their sons from armed gangs.

"Protecting borders is not the responsibility of people, but it's the state's duty to do so," Al-Araby said in a press statement, adding that the government failed to respond, despite the growing attacks on the south region recently.

Al-Araby described what is happening in the southern region as a humanitarian disaster, pointing out that families have no other choice than paying money to protect their children.
