A power cut in east Libya left huge parts of the region in total darkness, the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) reported Sunday.

The power cuts affected the areas from Qawarsha district in western Benghazi and expanded to the city of Tobruk.

The company explained that the outage was due to a separation in the transmitting lines of Qawarsha-Qamins and a failure in the North Benghazi Power Station.

"Work is underway to restart the North Benghazi Station and restore power to the region," the company added.
