The Health Minister of the Government of National Unity (GNU), Ali Al-Zanati, along with his Tunisian counterpart, Fawzi Mahdi, decided to form a joint Tunisian-Libyan health committee to follow up on the movements of travellers crossing the Ras Ajdir border and to monitor any potential incoming cases by testing for Coronavirus, while the border remains open.

Agence Tunis Afrique Presse (TAP) confirmed that both sides agreed to hold a remote meeting between the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Tunisian Observatory for New and Emerging Diseases on Thursday, July 1, to assess the truth of the health and epidemiological situation in order to make the relevant decisions in the interest of both countries, whether by tightening surveillance, or closing border crossings, if absolutely necessary.

TAP indicated that the meeting of the Libyan and Tunisian Health Ministries came during a period of much discussion regarding the decision by the Government of National Unity (GNU) to close the Ras Ajdir border as a solution to limit the spread of the coronavirus, particularly in light of the serious epidemiological situation in Tunisia, along with fears of the spread of mutated strains of the virus into Libya.
