The US Department of Homeland Security is to return to the Libyan authorities the head of an archaeological marble statue that was smuggled illegally to the United States, the Libyan Foreign Ministry said.

"The step comes in implementation of the memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries at the beginning of 2018 on the imposition of import restrictions on antiquities, cultural, and historical property of Libya," the Foreign Ministry explained.

The Director of the Department of International Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jamal Barq, clarified that the head will be handed over to the Libyan Embassy in Washington on Thursday, October 3, to be later returned to its historical location in Libya.
