The Italian Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio has stressed the need to prevent all entry of weapons into Libya through air, sea or land in order to achieve a permanent ceasefire in the country.

In a speech before the Italian Senate on Thursday, Di Maio confirmed that the European Union had agreed on Monday last, to a new way forward which would include the respect of the present arms embargo which has been imposed on Libya since 2011.

He said, we should bear in mind that ‘Operation Sophia’ was incapable of meeting the task of preventing weapons from entering Libya, and a more successful way forward must be sought to prevent the entry by air, land and sea.
