Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte emphasized the need to hold free elections in 2019 to allow the Libyan people to shape their country's future.

"It's up to the Libyan people to decide," Conte told Italian newspaper La Stampa, adding that the political process must go through the path of elections.

He also noted that the UN-backed National Conference to be held in February could strengthen what was stated in the United Nations roadmap and the Palermo Conference, and may in turn create a consensus with respect to future entitlements.
