The Italian Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Danilo Toninelli, said on Tuesday that his country will provide Libya with patrol boats to assist the Libyan Coast Guard in the search and rescue of migrants.

Toninelli said the Italian government will grant new means of transport to strengthen the Libyan authorities' capabilities to tackle the launch of boats from Libya’s shores.

The Italian media outlet AKI stated that the Italian minister said that there is an Italian-Libyan project which aims to strengthen the management of search and rescue operations at sea, stressing that they are waiting for the response of the Libyan side to declare what they need to carry out their duties in this regard.
