Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio has said that he Memorandum of Understanding signed between Italy and Libya on immigration has contributed to reducing the number of migrant deaths at the sea.

In his speech at the Mediterranean Dialogues Forum in Rome, Di Maio reiterated his country's intention to strengthen bilateral cooperation with Libyan institutions with respect with the memorandum signed in 2017 on migration and to work to make it more efficient in terms of respecting rights with the participation of the United Nations, reaffirming "Italy is still committed to receiving refugees".
