The Italian Ambassador to Libya, Giuseppe Perrone, said that the competition between the Libyan Coast Guard and non-governmental organizations in the Mediterranean is putting the lives of migrants at risk.

In an interview with the Italian Rai television, Perrone stated that “it becomes dangerous when immigrants throw themselves into the water at sea for fear of being held in shelters then returning them to their countries.”

He confirmed the need to respect the work of the Libyan Coast Guard it carries out rescue operations, as stipulated in the Code of Conduct of the Italian Interior Ministry.
