The International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced that the number of drowning victims among illegal immigrants in the Mediterranean has risen to 994 people in 2019, including men, women, and children.

Italian Aki news agency quoted a spokesman for the IOM, Leonard Doyle, as saying "amid a rising wave of anti-immigrant sentiment in our policy around the world, this appalling figure of about 1,000 deaths is due in part to the hardline stance and open hostility against migrants fleeing violence and poverty."
