IOM spokesman for the Mediterranean region, Flavio Di Giacomo said that conditions in Libya-based immigration centres are unacceptable; the Italian news agency AKI quoted him as saying.

"IOM representatives visit the centres from time to time and provide some supplies to the migrants, however, we know that our presence there does not guarantee their rights”, he added.

He also referred to reports regarding cases of torture and ill-treatment, saying "we can ease the situation, but not change it,", explaining that the Libyan authorities are the ones in charge and the IOM has no power to change their management system.
