The Libyan Coast Guard intercepted and returned around 6,989 migrants to Libya since the start of this year, said the International Organization for Migration (IOM) mission in Libya.

On its Twitter account on Wednesday, the IOM clarified that 141 migrants were intercepted during the period from 4-9 August, expressing concern that the majority of these migrants end up in detention centres, while some are still missing.

It also called on the European Union (EU) to assume its responsibilities and take action to establish an alternative to disembarkation in Libya and reduce the suffering of the migrants.
