The International Organization for Migration (IOM), said that the number of migrants seized and returned to Libya since the beginning of this year has reached in excess of 5700 migrants of various nationalities.

The Organization announced the rescue of 299 migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean within the space of one week; however they were picked up and returned to Libya in separate operations.

The IMO also pointed to the presence of approximately 48000 refugees residing within Libya, whilst the number of migrants registered and living under government shelters does not exceed 3000, according to United Nations statistics.
