At least 2,000 migrants have drowned in the Mediterranean while trying to reach Europe since the beginning of this year, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has confirmed.

In its latest report released on Friday, the IOM said that the migratory flow across the Mediterranean has recently moved from Italy to Spain.

This comes as the UNHCR revealed that the number of migrants intercepted by the Libyan Coast Guard exceeded for the first time the number of those who reached the coast of Italy after their departure from Libya.
