Human Rights Solidarity (HRS) has called for the protection of journalists under international humanitarian law and relevant conventions and treaties.

“Human Rights Solidarity (HRS) calls for the implementation of the recommendations of the report by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on the Safety of Journalists”, a press release by the HRS on the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists read.

The human rights group has that journalists in Libya have been suffering numerous violations for decades and the lack of a suitable environment that allows them to carry out their work independently and without interference from authorities.

It also expressed support for the UN recommendations on the role of free media in rooting out racism and xenophobia, urging journalists to uphold the high values of their profession and work against hate speech.
