The Director of the Department of Monitoring, Investigation and Rapid Response at the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) Ramadan Osman said that the outbreak of "West Nile virus" in Tunisia does not constitute a threat to Libya.

"The likelihood of the spread of this disease in Libya is very weak because it spreads through infected mosquito bite," Osman explained, adding that the disease cannot be transmitted through normal contact with the sick person.

Osman called on surveillance sites, rapid response teams and hospital monitors to report any case coming from Tunisia suspected of being infected with the West Nile virus.
