The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres has expressed support for giving the African Union a more prominent role in mediating the Libyan crisis.

Guterres said Saturday that he understands the discontent of the AU for being ruled out from this file.

"We believe it is very necessary to involve the African Union in the endeavors to find a solution to the Libyan conflict," Guterres told a press conference in Addis Ababa.

He called for enhanced cooperation between the UN and the AU that would ensure a more effective role for the AU in resolving African conflicts.
