The General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) confirmed on Friday the loss of 1,100 megawatts in the western region, due to a technical failure in the gas fields of Mellitah Oil and Gas Company, which led the shortage of gas.

According to a company statement, some plant officials resorted to using light fuel to avoid the breakdown of all generating units and a complete blackout.

The statement indicated that work is underway to operate the fields, pump gas back, and return the units to work normally.
