The former president of the General National Congress (GNC) and Leader of the Ya Baladi Party, Nuri Abu Sahmain, welcomed the US Virginia court ruling on Friday that convicts Khalifa Haftar of war crimes in eastern Libya.

"This is a first step towards achieving justice," Abu Sahmain tweeted as he congratulated the Libyan people for this 'achievement.'

He said the ruling is a message to all who have committed crimes against civilians, that there is no impunity, and a signal to the Libyan judiciary, which displayed lethargy in the stages of investigations and trials for war criminals in Libya.

On Friday, Judge Leonie Brinkema of the US eastern district court of Virginia issued a rule in absentia, finding Haftar liable for war crimes he committed in his home country.
