The European Union and foreign ministers of France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom have expressed their concern about the military escalation in Libya ahead of the EU's Foreign Affairs Council meeting next Friday.

In a joint statement, the Europeans reaffirmed their commitment to cease fighting around Tripoli and elsewhere in the country and to seek ways to contribute to international mediation by returning to the political track.

It called on all members of the international community to respect the arms embargo imposed on Libya, considering that continuous interference from outside would only fuel the crisis in the country.
