The European Union (EU) is ready to provide assistance to Libya in monitoring the ceasefire in the country, saying sending a mission of monitors is up to the United Nations which is facilitating the political process in the country, Italian Aki news agency reported a European source as saying.

Aki said the source indicated that the assistance is ready once the Libyan government or the United Nations request it, reiterating that the EU is already participating in Libya's peace process via Operation IRINI.

The source said Operation IRINI isn't just about implementing the United Nations resolution about arms embargo but is also about training Libyan coastguards.
