The Commissioner for Home Affairs of the European Union (EU), Ylva Johansson, said that the EU is working hard to resume negotiations with Libya on migration amid an alarming increase in attempted crossings to Europe.

In a press statement, Johannson added that they have a fresh opportunity in Libya to deal with the issue, confirming her readiness to participate with the Government of National Unity in discussions on how to reach closer cooperation in regard to migration management.

She stressed that the role of the Libyan Coast Guard is essential and indispensable in the missions of search and rescue, attempting to prevent migrants from losing their lives at sea in their vain attempt to reach the European coast, as she put it.
