European Union's Human Rights Commission has expressed concern about measures taken by the EU to return migrants to Libya and gradually withdraw its ships from the Mediterranean search and rescue zone.

The commission noted that the decision to continue Operation Sophia without any maritime assets had a negative impact on the migration file, especially with the crackdown on NGOs trying to bridge the gap created by EU countries.

"The EU measures have limited the ability of these organizations to rescue migrants in international waters off the Libyan coast," the commission explained.
