The European Union (EU) has expressed its regret at the escalation of fighting in Libya, despite international calls for a humanitarian truce to help contain the coronavirus epidemic.

"The difficult conditions created by the Covid-19 make the need to stop the fighting more urgent than ever," the EU High Representative for Security and Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell stressed.

Borrell underscored that the EU deplores all attacks on civilians and the use of civilian infrastructure for military purposes, calling on all parties to respect human rights and international law.
