Libyan Center for Remote Sensing and Space Science (LCRSSS) said the earthquake that hit eastern Libyan city of Benghazi on Friday at 11.31 p.m. local time was registered by international networks as a 5.3 Richter scale earthquake, hitting northwest the city with a depth of 10 kilometers.

LCRSSS explained that the residents of Benghazi and nearby areas felt the earthquake, but with no effect, attributing the activity of the Mediterranean region in terms of seismicity to the movement of the African plate towards the Eurasian one.

Many residents of Benghazi took to social media on Friday night and said they had felt the earthquake at 11.31 p.m.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre said a 5.3 earthquake hit the Mediterranean 187 kilometers away from northwest Benghazi.
