The Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) William Lacy Swing has called on the Libyan authorities to stop the detention of migrants after being rescued by the Libyan Coast Guard.

In a statement during his visit to Libya last week, Swing said that the IOM seeks to accelerate the voluntary return of migrants to their countries of origin, calling on the Libyan authorities to repatriate all those who wish to return to their homes voluntarily instead of detaining them in shelters.

Swing called for the creation of separate centers for women and children, and to take necessary measures to keep families together, as well as to soften the terms of detention, in addition to facilitating access to migrants by UN staff throughout the country.
