The Italian Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio said on Wednesday, July 14, that he intends to visit Libya within the coming weeks, stressing his government’s interest in the situation within the country and the activities of the Libyan Coast Guard in the Mediterranean.

The announcement came during Di Maio’s response to a question presented in the Italian parliament regarding an incident of a member of the Libyan Coast Guard firing at a boat carrying migrants near the end of the month of June, and whether Italy intended to continue with financing its activities.

In his reply, Di Maio stressed that the Italian authorities have not previously, nor do they intend to provide funding to the Libyan Coast Guard, noting that strengthening the abilities of the Libyan authorities to carry out search and rescue activities within their area of responsibility and in compliance with international laws is one of the lines followed by the Italian government.
