Italy believes that there can be no stability in the Sahel region without a stable Libya, says the top Italian diplomat Luigi Di Maio.

Addressing the European Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels Monday, Di Maio said it is necessary to strengthen our commitment to helping the riparian states in West Africa to contain the terrorist threat in the area from the coast to the Gulf of Guinea.

"We support enhancing the role of the European Union in stabilizing the Sahel region," said Di Maio, indicating that there are serious proposals that need consideration and discussions in the context of regional and national action in order to implement the new EU strategy.
