Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio has stressed that his country's aim in Libya is to return the parties to the path of peace, not to exercise "colonial influence".

Speaking to the Italian "Ray Uno" channel, Di Maio denied exercising any pressure on Libyans "like some other countries," saying "Italy is not acting like a colonial but defending its geostrategic assets that still exist."

Di Maio addressed in his statements Italy's relationship with Europe, which he believes is deteriorating, because of the Libyan file as well as other issues.

However, he was hopeful about the future of Libya, saying, "there is a light at the end of the tunnel, though remote," it is still present, as he put it.
