A court in Malta ordered a release on bail of a Libyan national imprisoned for hijacking an aircraft belonging to Afriqiyah Airways in 2016 and forcing it to land in Malta.

The detainee was released after having spent the maximum period allowed in prison without trial.

The lawyer of the accused, "Musa Shaha" said his client has the right to leave prison in accordance with Maltese law, on the expiration of the maximum period of 30 months in the pre-trial detention period provided by law.

The Court issued bail on condition that he provides a fixed address in Malta and does not leave the island as he is still awaiting trial for charges of kidnapping.
