Italian Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte said that he had urged Haftar, during their meeting in Rome to shift away from the military approach and follow the path of negotiations that would bring lasting peace and stability to Libya.

"From the start, we have sided with the Libyan people and supported the Government of National Accord (GNA), but at the same time, we maintained a comprehensive approach that encourages dialogue with all Libyan parties," Conte told Italian press.

He also rejected accusations regarding the inconsistency of his government’s policy towards the Libyan crisis, following the ongoing controversy on Sarraj’s retreat from visiting Rome, on Wednesday, because of Haftar's presence at the time.
