The President of the High Council of State (HCS), Abdulrahman Suwaheli, has stressed that the call for holding elections in Libya is a sovereign decision, which can only be made by the HCS and the House of Representatives in accordance with the terms of the Libyan Political Agreement (LPA) and no internal or external party has the right to interfere.

During his meeting with the Dutch Ambassador to Libya, Eric Strating, at the headquarters of the HCS in Tripoli on Monday, Suwaheli stressed that his proposal for a call for early elections in the event of stalled negotiations to amend the political agreement still exists, reiterating the position of the HCS in support of the continuation of the political process, and their wish to succeed in the negotiations to amend the LPA in order to achieve balance and full partnership with the House of Representatives, leading to an end in the political divide, which will in turn alleviate the suffering of Libyan citizens.
