The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the release of Fernando Espinosa, a 29-year-old American teacher and former US Navy submariner, who was detained for violating visa restrictions and movement procedures, saying that he had arrived in his country.

On December 23, CNN reported that Espinoza disappeared in Libya on November 9, 5 weeks after arriving in the country to start a new job at an international school in Tripoli, noting that he was on a weekend trip to the desert to visit the Qaberoun oasis.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that Espinoza entered Libya with a valid visa and worked as a teacher, but the validity of the visa expired, and he was stopped in the south by the security services for violating the movement procedures despite the several warnings he received that the roads are not safe and he may put himself in danger.
