Algeria warned of what it called dangerous repercussions on the security of the neighbouring countries of Libya in the event of an uncontrolled and unplanned withdrawal of mercenaries and weapons from the Libyan territory.

This came in a speech by the special envoy of the Algerian Foreign Ministry, Ammar Ballani, during a meeting of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU), to discuss the impact of the withdrawal of foreign forces and mercenaries from Libya on the Sahel region and the African continent as a whole.

Ballani reiterated the necessity for this withdrawal to take place gradually, in an orderly fashion and securely under the auspices of the United Nations in coordination with neighbouring countries, expressing Algeria’s readiness to support the Libyans and enable them to benefit from its own experience in the field of national reconciliation.
