Libya’s representative to the United Nations (UN), Taher Al-Sunni, expressed his total rejection of Belgium’s attempts to, effectively “blackmail Libya,” through freezing its funds, presently held in Belgian banks.

Al-Sunni said, on his official Twitter account, “We refuse to enter into blackmail with certain people, to seize Libya’s sovereign funds,” adding, “Belgium once again continues in its attempts, having already seized 15 billion euros of frozen assets, holding it hostage in a flimsy, unsubstantiated criminal case.”

He asked to summon the head of the Libyan Investment Authority for investigation, considering these steps provocative and unacceptable, further calling on Belgium as a whole to back off and desist from exploiting the country’s conditions.
