The US Central Command in Africa (AFRICOM) said Wednesday that the December elections in Libya would be a significant step towards stability and national reconciliation in the country, as it reaffirmed its support for the diplomatic efforts of the US Ambassador to Libya, Richard Norland, in this regard.

Taking to Twitter earlier on Wednesday, Norland said the United States shares the Libyans' concerns about the threats facing the upcoming elections. "We call on all parties to de-escalate tensions and to respect the Libyan-led, legal and administrative electoral processes underway."

He underscored that "armed actors" and the risk of violence must not be allowed to threaten elections scheduled to start on Dec. 24 and the aspirations of millions of Libyans to cast their votes.
