The 19th Mediterranean Games kicked off in the Algerian city of Oran on Saturday, with the participation of 34 Libyan athletes competing in 15 sports.

More than 3,600 athletes representing 26 Mediterranean nations will take part in the tournament, including three countries from Asia, five from Africa, and 18 from the European continent.

The multi-sport event organised by the International Committee of Mediterranean Games (CIJM) was launched for the first time in Alexandria, Egypt, in 1951. It is held every four years for countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea in Africa, Asia, and Europe.
