A girl from Sirte had to undergo a major surgery at Misrata Central Hospital last Wednesday following a landmine explosion.

The 11-year-old girl and her family were leaving Sirte to escape the expected fight against ISIS when a landmine exploded in their car in the outskirts of the city. The girl sustained serious injuries including gastrointestinal perforation, legs and elbow fractures, and clogged arteries in the right leg.

During a 17-hour operation, a team of 6 surgeons from the departments Orthopedics and Vascular Surgery managed to save the girl's life. Her health condition is said to be stable now.

ISIS militants have planted booby-traps in the areas they lost in order to prevent the advance of Misrata-led forces, but most of these booby traps explode in ordinary families fleeing the ongoing war in the region.
