The Sabha Medical Center (SMC) has started carrying out the legal procedures regarding burying the unidentified bodies that are accumulated inside its morgue after it had to close the morgue over the big number of corpses and the passiveness of the authorities regarding the issue.

The spokesman of the SMC, Osama Al-Wafi, said Thursday that they had called in a forensic doctor from Nafousa Mountain to conduct the autopsy in the presence of the Public Prosecutor and the Sabha Police Station officials.

“After that, we have ordered the burial to take place so that the accumulated bodies in the morgue can be done with and allow the morgue to receive new bodies, as it stopped doing so since last Thursday.” Added Al-Wafi.

He also said that most of the corpses are unidentified and were accumulated as such because there was no forensic doctor for the autopsy.

“There are over 48 bodies in the morgue and we urge the ministry of justice as well as the relevant authorities to appoint a forensic doctor for the southern region to avoid more accumulations and ultimately leading to closing the morgue.” Al-Wafi indicated.

On Thursday, the SMC alarmed the ministry of health calling for serious steps to solve the issue of the bodies as the SMC had become unable to take in more corpses in the morgue and as the bodies started posing a health issue in the area.
