The poliomyelitis vaccine national campaign has commenced in all health centers across Libya under the supervision of the World Health Organization (WHO), the vaccination department of the National Center for Fighting Diseases has announced.

The vaccination campaign to ensue next Saturday and will last 6 days targeting newborns and other children who have not reached school age, stated the Director Manager of the Tripoli vaccination department, Al-Sadiq Baheilil.

Baheilil confirmed that the WHO had helped considerably in the campaign by providing a million and a half doses of polio vaccinations.

UNICEF Libya said it has delivered 1.5 million doses of Polio vaccines to the National Centre for Disease Control on 24 March 2016. The delivery will be used during this National Immunisation Campaign.

Poliomyelitis is a contagious disease that could be contracted by children from birth until they become five years old. It may cause paralysis, which in most cases is incurable, while in some late-cured cases, it might cause death.
