Director of the National Institute for Oncology Dr. Mohammed Al-Faqih announced that the therapeutic radiology department began treatment with Intensive Technology (IMRT) for the first time in Libya.

Dr. Al-Faqih praised the Medical Physics and technicians at the therapeutic radiology department for their achievements in this specialty.

The new facility will allow the institute to offer advanced radiotherapy. IMRT uses advanced technology to manipulate photon and proton beams of radiation to conform to the shape of a tumor.

The multiple small photon or proton beams can irradiate a tumor with high accuracy . The radiation intensity of each beam is controlled, and the beam shape changes throughout each treatment.

This advanced type of radiation therapy will help limit side effects and damage to healthy tissue.
