The central AC unit in the Benghazi Medical Center (BMC) has ceased operating in most units due to delayed maintenance and the lack of spare parts, the center said on its Facebook on Sunday.

The Director of the Media Office at the BMC, Khalil Qweider, said that doctors had to use fans to alleviate the pain and suffering of the sick children in the Children's Heart Unit as the summer heat kicks off in Libya.

"The center requires periodic maintenance and the company entrusted with the work has not been paid for months. The budget allocated to the center has been suspended since 2013," he added.

Qweider accounted that the Children's Heart Unit had performed 14 successful surgeries in two weeks, the last of which was a child from the city of Ubari. No single death has been reported to date.

The doctors urged BMC administration to quickly provide air conditioners in the operation room and the intensive care unit ICU.
